Character Name: Badou Nails
Canon: DOGS: Bullets & Carnage
Canon Point: Chapter 82
Background/History: The farthest back we see of Badou’s past is when he’s around his early teens. He lived with his older brother, Dave, and their parents are assumed to be out of the picture. Dave worked as a freelance journalist and Badou often tagged along on his information gathering missions and helped him out of tight spots. In the aftermath of a particularly dangerous scoop a group of strange soldiers tracked down the brothers and killed Dave and left Badou seriously wounded. Hence the eye patch and scar on his right hand. From the flashbacks we learned that Badou picked up smoking from his brother as well as his career of choice.
Fast-forward seven years and Badou is living alone and supporting himself with two jobs-his journalism and working part time at a shop. He’s colleagues with a girl named Mimi who’s always mocking Badou for getting into trouble. He was introduced to his partner Heine by a priest in an underground church named Bishop. They are often hired for certain jobs by Miss Liza, the leader of a community for genetically manipulated people who are born with things like animal features, angel wings, etc. They made their base at Bishop’s church.
One day Badou is working a marriage infidelity case, which translates to him being harnessed to the side of a hotel building as he takes pictures of the cheating spouse. The harness breaks as he tries to make a grab for a cat that’s wandering by that has a reward on its head if returned to its owner, and he ends up hanging around outside a window a few floors below the one he was at. But as luck would have it he ends up being audience to the secret S&M activities of one of the city’s most powerful dons. (Basically like a high ranking mafia guy). So of course he takes a picture….and ends up running for his life away from the don’s men. Eventually they corner him, but just before they can really rough him up, a man arrives and saves him on accident.
Then Badou and the man, Mihai go to the café Buon Viaggio, where Mihai works so Badou can take a bath and get a change of clothes. Later on, the don and his men track then down at the café and open fire on the building. The don, Domino Bordoni, demands the return of the “top-secret” file that was supposedly taken from them. Right around that time Badou discovers that his camera had been shot to pieces, leaving them with nothing to bargain with. He’s also been without a cigarette for a while and finally takes one off of one of the don’s fallen men. But just as he’s about to light it, a gunshot goes off, blowing through the middle of his cigarette. Badou pretty much loses his mind at this point and shoots up the don’s men. When he finally makes it to the don he asks him with he has a cigarette and the don gives him one. Afterwards Badou is forced to repair the damage done to the café.
A few days later Badou goes to the church to find Heine right in time to witness his partner show up, clothes riddled with bullet holes. Heine changes clothes and then drags Badou out of the church. Heine gives him guns and takes away his cigarettes so Badou can shoot up the place and act as a distraction while Heine goes in a saves a girl named Nill. All goes to plan and Heine leaves Badou behind to deal with the mess.
Eventually Heine and Badou get involved with a mysterious girl, Naoto, who follows them to Miss Liza’s place one day. After finding out Naoto’s reasons for seeking them out, Liza hires Badou to uncover information on the secret underground facility Heine is connected to. One day he receives a note inviting him to an orchestra performance along with two tickets. The conductor turns out to be a man nicknamed “Herbst” who was responsible for Dave’s death and Badou’s eye and the scar on his right hand and also has a history with the underground facility.
They engage in a gun fight until Mihai, another acquaintance of Badou’s, shows up behind Herbst and holds him at gunpoint. Unfortunately Herbst has the ability to hypnotize people and he used this on Mihai to get him to shoot Badou. Soon after, Herbst leaves them to be blown up by the bombs he set up in the building beforehand. They manage to escape in time and end up sharing a room in the hospital. During the time Badou and Mihai are fighting Herbst; the organization that created Heine releases a second attack on the Underground, leaving it blocked off from the upper level town.
Heine, Naoto, Nill and the others are all stuck down there so Badou and Mihai leave the hospital early, despite their doctor’s protests, and take a passageway-that’s really more like a long stairway-down to the Underground. But they are intercepted by some of the organization’s soldiers. In a last ditch effort to lose them, Mihai throws Badou and himself into the water system that flows besides the stairway. When they finally get out of the water they’ve made it to the Underground in time to see some former enemies plotting how to take Heine out. Mihai and Badou beat them up and head for Bishop’s church.
When they finally reach the church, Badou is just in time to stop a possessed Naoto from killing Heine. Soon after, Miss Liza arrives with her men and tries to kill Bishop after discovering what had been done to their kidnapped children (they were experimented on and made into the soldiers) because he had known all along. Heine offers to either take Bishop’s place or to be left alive to kill the woman responsible for it all.
Later, Badou tries questioning Heine about his plans, but gets interrupted by the same group of enemies he beat up earlier, as they hit Heine with their car. Of course, Heine gets up and shoots at them and that’s the end of that. The Heine’s brother Giovanni shows up, saying that he’s put some distance between the organization and himself and offers to show them the way inside it. But Heine notices that something isn’t right and it turns out that Herbst is the one controlling Giovanni’s body. Reluctantly they follow him, but are stopped by the appearance of two other children like Heine and Giovanni, the twins Luki and Noki.
Previous Game History: N/A
Personality: Badou is a mess of contradictions. He says he doesn’t like nosing around in people’s pasts, and yet part of his job as an information broker is to know all he can about his city and the people in it. He tells Naoto that it’s a bad idea to investigating the Underground because she could end up like him, and seems to have no interest in picking up his brother’s old work, but then turns around and begins investigating it because Miss Liza tells him to without so much as a protest. Many times he’s stated that he won’t get involved only to end up right in the thick of things. An important thing to keep in mind about Badou is that his words and his actions do not always match up.
At a glance, Badou is loud-mouthed, cowardly, and incapable of staying out of trouble. The sad part is that the trouble is using the one finding him instead of the other way around. That probably makes him extremely unlucky as well. However, despite how incompetent he may seem, and the number of times he’s been held hostage and needed Heine to save him, Badou is quite capable of looking after himself when it counts. When it was only him and his brother, Badou was the one who had to do chores, cook, and look after things while his brother worked his cases. These skills ensured that he could look after himself once his brother was killed.
Badou in some ways resembles a cockroach as he’s always finding a way to stay alive, even during the times where he needs a helping hand. He can be extremely quick thinking as shown numerous times. Heine once left him strapped to a desk chair with his hands tied around his back, yet he managed to get two guns in hand and shot all the guards who came after him by spinning around in the chair and shooting. It’s very rare for Badou to be the one initiating violence (while he has his nicotine fix anyways) but once it’s directed towards him, he’s not above paying it back in full when he has to. But he’d rather avoid violent conflicts altogether because, yes, he can be very cowardly sometimes. Like the time a car full of mafia guys was chasing him and he hide behind Nill while Heine and Naoto took care of it.
Socially, Badou is a pretty open guy. If you ignore the fact that he rarely talks about his past, and when he does it’s usually to make some kind of grim point. But aside from that he’s pretty much what you see is what you get. He’s open about his thoughts and speaks his mind freely. However he tends to be pretty blunt depending on whom he’s talking to. He has tact though, and is capable of being professional when the situation calls for it. He doesn’t really have many people he’d consider friends. In fact the two people who could fall in that category, Mimi and Heine, are also the two people he’d definitely never admit to being close to. This could just be his way of making sure enemies don’t find his weak spot. If he pretends he doesn’t care about them as anything more than colleagues than no one can use them against him.
In general, Badou isn’t a very altruistic person. He’s not out to be a hero or make the world a better place. He’s pretty much come to terms with the fact that the world isn’t perfect, and can be a pretty terrible place. Basically he figures that everyone has their own baggage to haul around. This doesn’t mean he’s not sympathetic. He’s done a number of cases for Liza that involve rescuing genetically mutated children that have been kidnapped to be sold off to prostitution and the like. He didn’t accept them necessarily because it’s the right thing to do-a job is a job-but it’s the kind of job he really doesn’t mind doing despite his complaining. He may not be a hero but he can at least take out some of the world’s trash.
His relationship with his brother is complicated and somewhat traumatic for him. In ways he idolized his brother when he was younger and tried to be like him, which is how he picked up smoking in the first place. But after his brother’s death he got used to brushing everything off under the excuse of his brother being an idiot that didn’t know when to quit. On many occasions he’s said that he’s not planning to die like his brother did, by getting into something so deep you can’t get out of. That’s yet another contradiction. For someone who doesn’t want to end up like his brother, he sure seems to be following the same path as his brother did.
Now, possibly the strangest relationship Badou has is the one between him and nicotine. As long as he has a steady stream of nicotine in his system he’s is regular cowardly, troublesome self. But once it begins to wear off Badou becomes extremely irritable and trigger happy. It’s like watching someone completely lose their mind in under a minute. Suddenly he’ll be crazed and violent, shooting at anyone who comes at him. It’s important to note that he’s still himself during these times. He’s completely aware of everything. He doesn’t just start shooting everyone alike, friend or foe. This state will only last until he gets his next nicotine fix. It hasn’t been explained why this happens, it just does.
Abilities/Powers: Badou is a regular human, so he doesn’t have any special abilities/powers. He is, however, a fairly decent marksman. And he has enough fighting ability to take care of himself during a brawl. He also has severe nicotine fits when he hasn’t had a cigarette in a while, and that plus a stressful, life-threatening situation, sends him over the deep end and causes him to start shooting up his enemies.
Items/Weapons: One pack of cigarettes, and two Ingram MAC Model 10 guns.
Sample Entry: [Badou isn’t what you’d call technologically impaired or anything, so figuring out how to use the phone after a few tries wasn’t too difficult. The spiel he’d gotten from his new roommates had been beyond crazy, but after the week Badou has had he’s about ready to believe anything.
He can almost feel his place pulling at his investigative instincts, what little he may have. But he can’t help but feel that looking for answers might be more trouble than it’s worth. Besides he has an unrelated question that he needs an answer to even more.]
Now, I know everyone is probably busy playing the ‘fill the new people in’ game, so I’ll try not to take up too much of your time.
[He pulls a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket and slides one out, putting the end between his lips.] Anyone got a light?
Sample Entry Two: It was supposed to be a routine job. Stake the place out, snap some pictures, maybe throw in a little recon and figure out where all the entrances and exits are in case his partner decides to blow the plan and run in guns blazing before Badou gets actual proof of foul play. All in all it was a week’s worth of work that would pay the month’s rent. Badou wasn’t about to complain. It was around day two of his stake out that it happened.
After an hour of nothing of note happening, Badou decided it wouldn’t hurt to leave his hiding spot to take a quick piss in the bushes a few feet away. It wasn’t a far distance to go, and he’d have the cover of the trees. But when you have luck as bad as Badou’s, you should never expect anything to be easy. When he finally made it to the bushes, someone had already gotten there first. A group of someones actually. Each of them dressed in an identical black cape and kneeling on the grass.
“The hell…?” Did he just stumble across some weird, hippy cult praying to the trees or something? Heads snapped up one by one. Clearly he must have spoken louder than he thought. Badou stepped back, holding his hands up in the universal sign for surrender. “Sorry, must have taken a wrong turn on the way to the john. Didn’t mean to disturb you…” He spotted two bulked out guys pulling guns out of their robes and immediately turned and ran. Gun shots go off behind him. “I thought hippy, nature freaks where supposed to be non-violent!” A shot nearly missed him, grazing his cheek.
“Goddammit, Heine! If I die I’ll come back and haunt you!”
